Reading Success Network (RSN)

Through its Region III Comprehensive Center project, CEEE participated in the Reading Success Network (RSN), a major national literacy improvement project, from 1997-2002.

The Comprehensive Centers' Reading Success Network was designed to improve student reading achievement by developing a national network of trainers of teacher-coaches. These teacher-coaches supported classroom teachers' efforts to provide powerful instruction in reading. The national network of comprehensive centers provided support, training, and follow-up to the teacher -coaches engaged in this reading initiative.

How Did RSN Work? Teacher-coaches supported teachers in focusing their instruction so that all children could become successful readers. Teacher-coaches were trained to help teachers use ongoing assessment, data analysis, and peer coaching in order to focus their instruction on children's learning needs.

Critical components of RSN

  1. Peer coaching by the teacher coaches;
  2. Use of ongoing classroom assessment in reading in order to collect data on individual students;
  3. Examination of data by peer coaches and the teachers whom they coach in order to determine appropriate intervention strategies; and
  4. Ongoing support of the network through follow-up training, coaches meetings, and forums through which participating schools can dialogue with one another concerning RSN.
